Large ships can berth deep inside the working port, including Alto Fondale quay 46/47, so the normal first move is the official port shuttle into central Livorno. From there you can stay in Livorno or continue via Livorno Centrale toward Pisa, Florence or Lucca.

Livorno is less about one fixed cruise terminal and more about understanding the transfer chain: ship → port shuttle → central Livorno → optional station → Tuscany.

Ships dock at the extensive Port of Livorno quays (such as Alto Fondale or Molo Italia), which feature passenger reception desks, tourist info, and port shuttle staging areas.
Getting into town
Can you walk? No. Walking directly out of the industrial container and commercial berths is prohibited for security reasons. Shuttle Bus Pick-Up & Drop-Off Details: Cruise lines or the port authority operate mandatory shuttle buses that pick passengers up right outside the ship gangway and drop them off approximately 10 to 15 minutes later at Piazza del Municipio in the heart of Livorno's city center. History of Livorno
Reimagined in the late 16th century by the Medici Grand Dukes of Tuscany, Livorno was transformed from a tiny fishing village into a thriving "ideal city" (La Città Ideale) and a free port (Porto Franco). The Medici welcomed persecuted religious and ethnic minorities from across Europe—including Jews, Greeks, and Moors—fostering a uniquely cosmopolitan merchant hub defined by its defensive canals, pentagonal fortresses, and a legacy of multicultural tolerance.
What to visit in Livorno
Venezia Nuova (New Venice): Livorno’s atmospheric historic quarter, crisscrossed by 17th-century canals, stone bridges, and old merchant warehouses reminiscent of Venice. Fortezza Vecchia & Fortezza Nuova: Massive fortifications built by the Medici family to protect the harbor and city. Terrazza Mascagni: A stunning, elegant seaside promenade paved with over 34,000 black-and-white checkered tiles overlooking the Ligurian Sea. Mercato Centrale: One of Europe's largest indoor food markets housed in a striking 19th-century glass-and-iron hall, famous for local seafood and traditional cacciucco (Tuscan fish stew).

Florence: Located 1.5 hours away by train or car, serving as the cradle of the Renaissance with the Florence Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, and Ponte Vecchio. Pisa: Just 20 minutes away by train, home to the world-famous Piazza dei Miracoli, the Leaning Tower, and the historic cathedral. Lucca: A charming medieval Tuscan city located about 45 minutes away by train, completely enclosed by massive, intact 16th-century rampart walls that double as a tree-lined pedestrian promenade.
Going to Pisa or Florence?
Public Transport (Train to Pisa or Florence): Take the bus or a taxi from the port drop-off to Livorno Centrale station. From there, frequent regional trains take just 15 to 20 minutes to reach Pisa (ideal for seeing the Leaning Tower) or about 1 hour 15 minutes to reach Florence (Firenze Santa Maria Novella station in the historic center). Set Tours & Excursions:Official shore excursion coaches, private tour operators, and regional tour vans park directly outside the ship berths or port exit gates and at Piazza del Minico in Livorno town centre shuttle drop off point to run day trips to Pisa and Florence and across Tuscany.
For most large-ship berths, the shuttle is the practical route through the working port into central Livorno.
Venezia Nuova, Piazza Grande, Fortezza Vecchia and the central canals are all realistic on foot from the shuttle area.
Use the local bus or a taxi from the city centre. Check live Trenitalia times before committing to Pisa, Florence or Lucca.
Autolinee Toscane’s Urbano Capoluogo ticket has cost €2 since 1 August 2026 and is valid for 70 minutes.
The most important Livorno rule
Getting back to Livorno is not the same as getting back to your ship. You still need the city transfer and port shuttle, so protect time for both.

Livorno and Pisa are very realistic independently. Lucca is manageable with a long enough call. Florence is possible but demands an early start, live train checking and a large safety margin. Cinque Terre is much less forgiving because every additional connection adds return risk.
