Getting into Town
Can you walk? Yes, exceptionally easily. The port is one of the most conveniently located in the Mediterranean, sitting just 500 meters (about a 5 to 10-minute flat walk) from the heart of the city and the main Piazza del Duomo. Shuttle Bus Pick-Up & Drop-Off Details: Because the ship berths practically at the doorstep of the city center, mandatory port shuttle buses are neither required nor operated for local town transit. Official taxis, hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses, and tour operators are stationed right outside the port exit gates.
History of Messina
Founded in the 8th century BC by Greek colonists under the original name Zancle (derived from the Greek word for a sickle, due to the curved shape of its natural harbor), Messina later became a vital Roman and Byzantine trading hub. Throughout the centuries, it was shaped by Arab, Norman, and Spanish rule. The city's modern architecture and layout were largely defined by massive rebuilding efforts following two catastrophic disasters: a devastating earthquake and tsunami in 1908, followed by heavy Allied bombing during World War II.
