Valencia is one of Europe’s busiest cruise ports, but the headline destination — Valencia — is a substantial journey inland. Treat the transfer as part of the port day, not as a minor first step.
Your cruise terminal
Ships dock at the active Port of Valencia (Muelle de Cruceros), located roughly 5 kilometers southeast of the city center. The port features modern passenger terminal infrastructure (near the Trasmed ferry terminal) equipped with tourist information kiosks, duty-free shops, and waiting lounges. Follow your ship’s own signs because the first shuttle arrangement can vary by berth.
Getting to Valencia
Can you walk? No. Walking directly out of the massive commercial container port and berths is prohibited for security reasons. Shuttle Bus Pick-Up & Drop-Off Details: Free port shuttle buses transport passengers from the outer berths to the main passenger terminal building. From there, cruise lines or local port authorities operate direct shuttle buses straight into the historic center near Plaza de la Reina or Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Official taxis also wait right outside the terminal exit. For independent visitors, the port/city shuttle or public transport is usually the best-value route. Valenciaport lists shuttle services plus EMT buses 4, 30, 95 and N8 and Metro L5/L6 around Neptú. Taxi is simplest for a direct journey to a specific attraction.
History of Valencia
Founded by the Romans in 138 BC as Valentia, the city evolved through Visigoth and Moorish rule into a flourishing Mediterranean agricultural and trading powerhouse. Conquered in 1238 by King James I of Aragon, it entered its Golden Age in the 15th century, becoming a major economic and cultural hub for silk trade and art. Today, Valencia brilliantly juxtaposes its meticulously preserved medieval Gothic heritage with visionary modern developments like the City of Arts and Sciences.
The port itself was developed as Valencia’s maritime gateway. If your call is short, the seafront, Marina de València and town centre make a far less stressful alternative to travelling to and from Valencia.
What to visit
La Lonja de la Seda (The Silk Exchange): A stunning late-Gothic secular masterpiece and UNESCO World Heritage site featuring twisting stone columns and intricate vaulted ceilings. Valencia Cathedral & El Miguelete: A historic cathedral blending Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles, housing what many traditions believe to be the authentic Holy Grail, alongside a bell tower offering panoramic city views. Mercado Central: One of Europe's largest and most vibrant Art Nouveau food markets, packed with fresh local produce, jamón, seafood, and saffron. The Turia Gardens (El Jardín del Turia): A unique 9-kilometer public park winding through the city in the drained riverbed of the Turia River, dotted with walking paths, orange trees, and modern bridges.

The City of Arts and Sciences (Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias): A breathtaking futuristic architectural complex designed by Santiago Calatrava, housing Europe's largest aquarium (L'Oceanogràfic), interactive science museums, and IMAX cinemas. Albufera Natural Park: Located about 10 kilometers south of the city, this serene freshwater lagoon and wetland reserve is surrounded by traditional rice paddies and serves as the historic home of authentic Valencian paella.

Staying local
The Marina, Cabanyal and Malvarrosa are among the more forgiving options because they stay relatively close to the cruise port.
Central Valencia
