Ships dock directly within the magnificent Grand Harbour at the Valletta Waterfront (utilizing historical spaces like the Magazino Hall terminal). The quays feature full passenger services, duty-free shopping, and Wi-Fi.
Getting into Valletta town
Can you walk? Yes. Stepping off the ship places you right along the historic Pinto Wharf. To get up into the walled city center, you can either tackle a 20 to 25-minute walk uphill or walk about 300 meters down the waterfront to the Barrakka Lift, which whisks passengers straight up to the top of the ramparts and the Upper Barrakka Gardens in seconds for €1 Shuttle & Taxi Details: Official taxis and hop-on, hop-off tour buses wait directly outside the terminal exit. Local public bus route 130 also stops right outside the port area to connect travelers toward the city edge
History of Valletta
Built entirely by the Knights of St. John (The Hospitallers) following the miraculous victory of the Great Siege of 1565, Valletta was named after Grand Master Jean de Valette. Designed as an impenetrable fortified Renaissance grid city, it stands today as one of the world's most concentrated historic open-air museums, dripping in Baroque architecture, military history, and maritime heritage.
What to visit
St. John's Co-Cathedral:An outwardly austere 16th-century cathedral concealing an explosion of high-Baroque interior splendor, housing masterworks by Caravaggio. Upper Barrakka Gardens: A stunning public garden perched high on the bastion walls, offering sweeping panoramic views across the Grand Harbour and the historic "Three Cities". The Saluting Battery: Located directly beneath the gardens, where authentic cannons are fired ceremonially twice daily. Grand Master's Palace:The historic seat of power for the Knights and modern Maltese heads of state, featuring opulent staterooms and armory collections.

Mdina: Malta's ancient, vehicle-free medieval capital perched on a central hilltop, known for its silent, winding limestone alleys and noble palaces. The Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea, Cospicua): Historic fortified maritime towns sitting directly across the Grand Harbour, offering an authentic, uncrowded look at Malta's naval past.Hagar Qim & Mnajdra Temples: Extraordinarily well-preserved megalithic temple ruins dating back over 5,000 years, located along the southern coast.
Walk roughly 500 m along the waterfront, then take the lift straight up to Upper Barrakka Gardens in the heart of Valletta.
Valletta Cruise Port describes the city as a short walk away, but the lift avoids much of the climb from harbour level.
Not really necessary for central Valletta, but useful for Mdina, mobility needs or a time-controlled island excursion.

Valletta is exceptionally easy independently. The Barrakka Lift places you directly in the historic city, and most major sights are walkable. The Three Cities are also realistic by ferry; Mdina requires more transport time and should be treated as a deliberate excursion.
